PHIXER for Audiobook Narration / music beds that must stay mono-safe on phone playback

Narration plus a stereo music bed can cancel on mono and phone playback even when studio headphones sound fine. A chapter sting or under-narration bed that feels rich in cans can thin on one earbud, a phone speaker, or a mono-ish player path. Phase check with PHIXER after polarity and timing. It is not an ACX loudness tool, not a noise gate, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on earbuds or a phone.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an audiobook distributor, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / phone check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a narration music bed or chapter sting you must keep stereo through earbud and phone fold.

Three audiobook narration / music bed collapse modes

Fast audiobook narration / music bed / phone mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Sum L+R on the master / stereo bed bounce bus. Listen to sting punch, bed warmth, and side beds.
  2. A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: consonants in the sting, low-end warmth, wide pads under the narration.
  3. Preview the bounce on earbuds or a phone speaker with the bed ducked under a short spoken take. Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs. Note which path thins the fold.
  4. Re-check fold after any limiter / loudness / encode / distributor pass, not only before cleanup. Habit: mono compatibility checklist.

Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)

1. True mono / L+R listen plus phone preview

Hard L+R sum on the master / stereo bed bounce. Then preview on earbuds or a phone speaker under a short spoken take. Habit: mono compatibility checklist, Podcast beds, and the 60-second audition above.

2. Polarity if a path flips

Dual mics, stacked beds, dual-path stings. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.

3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools

Nudge dual mics, stacked takes, and wide beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.

4. Prefer correlated lows and center for phone fold

Keep sting punch, low end, and critical bed body correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: Podcast beds and TV dialog.

5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If an audiobook music bed or chapter sting must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Phase check with PHIXER. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
